This task is not easy, considering the fact that the imperial collection on which the National Palace Museum is based on was, for a large part, a reflection of the personal taste of the Ch'ien-lung emperor. The book would also make a great coffee table book as the pictures are worth viewing over and over.. Book exactly as described.. On the other hand, the selection of paintings and ceramics (especially the Ju wares) are just superb. Some of the most precious items selected for the exhibition eventually were not able to make it to the United States, nontheless they are included in the book(now you get a chance to see them on the paper.) The authors cleverly extended a study of visual artifacts to a colorful (though not complete) portraiture of the cultural evolution in China. This is a very beautiful book, the full page botanical and insect illustrations are superb.I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my daughter who is a medical herbalist,but would really rather like to keep it for myself!Glennis.. This book is fine for those interested in literature, but if you are wanting info about insects don't buy it.. After viewing some of the original artwork in this book when visiting the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York City,
